| B/c I'm housebound, seems as good a time as any to write about the movies I saw over the break (keep in mind these all had to be parent-friendly, since I saw them with my folks). Here's a breakdown: -We Are Marshall: typical feel-good "Remember the Titans" type of movie. But also a well done one. Matthew McConaughey was really charismatic. -Pursuit of Happyness: really good. First time I actually was impressed by Will Smith, rather than entertained. His kid did a good job too. -The Good Shepherd: totally disappointing. Not terrible, but really slooooooooooow. And a different movie than I thought it'd be. Less spy thriller, more psychological study. -Dreamgirls: Good songs, good pace, good acting. Solid throughout. Jamie Foxx kinda phoned it in, Eddie Murphy was great, Jennifer Hudson has a great voice but a little rough on the acting, and Beyonce is way underrated for this role. -Freedom Writers: Dangerous Minds part II. Really good though, and inspiring. Made me want to be an inner city high school English teacher for about 1.5 seconds. Overall ranking: 1) Dreamgirls 2) Pursuit of Happyness 3) Freedom Writers 4) We Are Marshall 5) Good Shepherd | | |
| Yes folks it's true: Austin, TX, NOT St Louis, is where I ended up having school cancelled 2 TIMES in a row for weather. Who woulda thunk? I've lived in sweats for the past two days, which only happens when I'm sick. I reread a lot of graphic novels yesterday, and watched a movie, so that was fun. I had planned on watching Six Feet Under today, but my disks from Blockbuster WERE NOT IN THE MAILBOX. So much for "Neither sleet nor rain..." on behalf of the USPS. All lies. Yesterday I was not too bright. I bounced out of bed bright and early, got ready for my first day of class, all prepared to start off the semester right. I walk down to the bus stop, but FALL at the entrance to the apt complex (ice). I thought briefly about calling it a day. But no, I was resolved, turning over a new leaf, etc. Then I fell right back down. I finally hobbled my way to the stop, and noticed there was NOBODY around. No cars, no other people waiting at the stop, no buses. I called the shuttle number, and found out no campus shuttles that day. So I crept back to the apartment, found out campus was closed, and promptly changed into sweats. Even my mom knew the night before that campus was closed. That's what I get for going to bed early--screw that. Today after I checked the mail, I moved my car b/c a tree it was parked under was on the verge of crashing on top of it. On the way back to the apt, I fell. Again. Third time in two days. My body hates me. I'm sure more reading and movie watching is on the agenda for today. Viva winter! PS.....American Idol is back! You know you love it...... | | |
| Quick recap of what's happened since my last post:
Brian came to visit from St Louis--lots of fun. Celebrated my birthday, bowling-style--the late twenties are creeping up on me. Went home for Thanksgiving, had a good time w/ the rents. Was sick for basically the last week of classes.
Two Fridays ago, Brad left for St Louis. It felt weird in the apartment without him; not like we hang out all the time b/c he works so much, but it's just comforting to have other people inhabit a space. Odd since I'm an only child, I should be used to it. Add that to having been sick for the last week, and it was a funk-tastic weekend (and not in the cool 70's way). I tend to get the whole seasonal affective disorder thing in general, though it shouldn't be such a problem w/ all the sunshine we get here. Regardless, I was pretty mopey. But a couple of events last week perked me up.
On Tuesday, we went to check out Trail of Lights in Austin. It's basically a walk-through light display in the park; kind of a retro vibe. Anyway, it was a really good group and just silly wholesome fun. The next night, our small group did a community service project w/ Inside Books, where we mailed letters and books to inmates of Texas prisons. It was oddly uplifting. Then Thursday was the Christmas Pops Singalong at the Drafthouse, where we had backing vocals from the likes of the Muppets (charming), the Olsen Twins (creepy), and NSync (poppy). We then headed down to the Jackalope for drinks and cookies (which were strangely disgusting btw), caroling downtown along the way.
This weekend was also pretty low-key, but I was more peace with it than last. I've been working (and exercising) on a consistent basis, which has made me feel good. I think I can get through this program if I keep at it, I just have to want to do it--and I think I finally do.
I'll be heading home on Thursday, but I'm actually looking forward to it. I mean I love my folks, but I have a time-limit on being at home--only child smothering and all that. I'll have my car, so I won't be housebound, and I'll be staying busy b/w doing chores for my mom's Xmas present and working on my research.
Goals for the new year: -Work every day during the week (don't mock) -Exercise every day during the week--maybe start weight-lifting -Start dating -Take dance lessons, do some teaching, learn how to spin records--an activity that I can make my own
We'll see how many of these I end up keeping...

| First and foremost, I finally updated my pictures: http://photos.yahoo.com/ph/tm_lott/my_photos.
St Louis recapTwo weekends ago, I went to St Louis to visit. I got in on Thursday night, and met up w/ Brian, Annie, Tori, Meghana, Tasha Kay, and Grace at Joe's. I can't remember if I've posted about this place before, but basically it's someone's house that is only open to the public on Thursday nights. The main floor is a speakeasy/jazz club kind of atmosphere, with a stage for a music act each week; it's also decorated w/ the most truly random tsotchkes ever. Below that is a tiki lounge-themed basement, and outdoors is a beer garden replete w/ huge sculptures. Oh, and it's BYOB. That night, a female jug band called the Maid-rites were performing--they were dressed as beauty queens and had made cookies for everyone. Awesome. Caught up w/ Aaron that night after I got in.
On Friday, I met up w/ Brian for lunch, then we hit up the Loop for a bit before renting and watching some ep's of Da Ali G Show. Hi-larious. That night, we went with Aaron downtown to watch the Cardinals in the Series. We ended up at Paddy O's, which is literally down the street from Busch Stadium. It was insanely crowded, but somehow we got the area by the firepit, which meant a place to sit and somewhere to stash our coats. It was hella hot, though, so I discretely put out the fire. Well, then the table next to us freaked out about it being cold, so some middle-age woman started shimmying up the stovepipe to see if there was a switch or dial to turn it back on. We talked her down. The game was awesome, and it was amazing when THEY WON THE SERIES! The crowd freaked out, spraying beer everywhere, jumping up and down. We ran into the streets of downtown, and then into the stadium. It was the night of a thousand high-fives. Very fun, and insanely memorable. Saturday was lunch w/ Steph at Duff's in the CWE, then we met up w/ Brian to walk around, and finally Brad/Meghana at Bar Louie. Then to Meghana's place for some pre-partying w/ Pat and Larry. Crazy to have so many fourth-years all together again. Got dressed for the Halloween parties that night, and headed out. I was a cowboy (how appropriate)--here's some photos: Note the beer holster, which was a GREAT idea courtesy of Sarah P. Hit up Nathan's first, and then went to Jonathan's for some math peep craziness. Check out the album on my photopage--some real gems in there:).
On Sunday, I Metrolink-ed it back over to Jonathan's b/c I'd left my rental car over there, and then met up w/ non-math types (ie, mostly Journey'ers) for lunch at Fitz's. We got FREE root beer floats b/c it was Parents Weekend at Wash U--how great is that?! Then went back to Aaron/Sooraj's place, got packed up, and headed out. Overall, a great weekend.
Last weekend
On Friday, went to Jessica's place (along w/ Matt, Josh, Josh's brother, Sarah, Henri, and Linda) for a dinner party. Afterwards was karaoke at a place that felt like a hotel or convention center. We rocked the house to the likes of Journey, Kelly Clarkson, and ABBA. Pop is still alive and well, y'all.
Saturday was mostly spent preparing for Sarah/Henri's Apocalypse Wow party that night. I ended up going as someone who'd been through nuclear fallout, and as a result, my absorbed conjoined twin was bursting out: Creepy, no? Anyway, got there early and watched End of Days (w/ Arnold Schwarzenegger--SO BAD!), and socialized, and then the party began! You can read more about it on Posh's site. Left there at 4 am, crashed in bed by 5. Sunday was mostly spent recuperating.
Now
Tuesday was Veronica Mars/election coverage over at Henri's--disappointed, if not surprised, by Perry; but on the plus side, woo hoo Democrats! Last night was community group; tonight is either some event described as a "science fair with beer", or the old skool Hip Hop singalong down at the Drafthouse. Brian comes in tomorrow to visit for the weekend, so trying to get everything squared away for that. I'm sure there will be many stories as a result! | | |
| and is saying he wants me to visit St Louis. How can I refuse? Things I miss about St Louis that I'm looking forward to seeing/doing again (all in a few meager days): -The Loop (the shopping and people-watching) -Forest Park (the great outdoors) -Joe's, Maryland House, Atomic Cowboy (the bars) -Halloween in the CWE (the costumes) -Dancing it up w/ the ladies (the pimpin')
The list goes on...there will be a full report w/ pictures after I get back--I think you'll enjoy my Halloween costume:).
Last weekend the folks were in town; it actually went well, & we stayed busy. On Friday, they met up with Brad and I at Stubb's, where they got a chance to really hang out w/ him--and eat BBQ. Good times all around. On Saturday morning, my dad hunkered down to watch the UT game...in my living room. So funny. I accompanied my mom on a power-shopping trip. Seriously. I thought I was bad--now I know where I get it from. That night, we ate some Tex-Mex at Guero's on S Congress, then went and saw The Illusionist at the movies--very good. See it (and that other magician film, The Prestige) if you're looking for something different. Sunday was brunch at Hyde Park Grille w/ Sarah--rich Southern food and funny stories nearly knocked me flat. After I dropped off the 'rents, went to see the Prestige, then headed to Henri's for campfire goodness. Made hot dogs and smores--though sadly not the microwave kind. Does anyone remember those from growing up? Individually wrapped pre-assembled smores, ready to be exploded in the microwave....sweet.
I head out tomorrow for the Show Me state; update soon!
